How to Play Five Card Draw

    Updated Oct 22, 2026

To play 5 card draw, everyone antes and gets 5 cards face down. The player on the dealer's left starts a betting round. Then each player throws away the cards they don't want and draws replacements, usually up to 3, or 4 if they show an ace. A second betting round follows, and the best 5-card hand wins at the showdown.

5 card draw rules: the ante and the deal

Everyone puts in a small ante, like $0.25, so there's a pot before anyone looks. The dealer gives each player 5 cards face down, one at a time, starting on the left. There's no board and nothing face up; your 5 cards are your whole hand. Some groups use blinds like Hold'em instead, which works too, but antes are the classic home-game way. Hand rankings are the standard ones, covered in our poker hand rankings guide.

The betting rounds and the draw, step by step

    1. First betting round. The player on the dealer's left checks or bets. Once someone bets, everyone after must call, raise or fold.
    2. The draw. Starting on the dealer's left, each player still in throws away unwanted cards face down and gets the same number of new ones. Taking none is called standing pat. The dealer draws last.
    3. Second betting round. It starts with the first player still in on the dealer's left.
    4. Showdown. The last player who bet or raised shows first; if everyone checked, the player on the dealer's left shows first. The cards speak, so if someone misreads their hand, the table reads it for them.

If your Hold'em game is $0.25/$0.50, play $0.50 bets before the draw and $1 after it.

How many cards can you draw in 5 card draw?

This is the rule nobody agrees on. The most common home rule is 3 at most, or 4 if the card you keep is an ace, and you show the ace to prove it. Plenty of card rooms let you draw all 5, so it really is a house rule; decide it before the first deal. Showing the ace has a cost: the whole table now knows you're drawing to 1 card and nothing else.

    Tony A♣ K♦ 9♠ 6♦ 3♣ 4, showing A♣ (A♦ J♠ 5♣ 10♦) Pair of aces

Before the draw: Mike bets $0.50, Sara and Tony call, Jen raises to $1, and all 3 call. After the draw: Mike bets $1, Sara raises to $2, Tony and Jen fold, Mike calls. Sara made the last raise, so she shows first, and her flush beats three queens.

    Pot Amount
    Antes (4 x $0.25) $1.00
    First round (4 x $1) $4.00
    Second round (Mike $2 + Sara $2) $4.00
    Sara wins $9.00

From across the table, Sara's 1-card draw and Jen's 1-card draw looked identical: one could be two pair, the other a flush that just got there. In draw you never see a single card, so the number someone takes is the only information they give you.

The video plays this hand out draw by draw and shows why the 2 one-card draws look the same.

    Jacks or better

A lot of tables add jacks or better: you need at least a pair of jacks to open the betting. Once someone opens, anyone can call with anything. If nobody can open, everyone antes again and the cards are redealt, so the pot grows; with 4 players that happens about 4 deals in 10. The opener has to prove it at the end, so if you open with jacks and break them chasing a flush, keep the discarded jack to the side and show it. In the hand above, Mike's queens were enough to open, so it plays the same.

How to play 5 card draw with 2 players, and how many can play

Draw is one of the best games for 2 people, because it uses only 10 cards and a lot of tables let you draw as many as you want. The player who isn't dealing acts first in both rounds, and the deal switches every hand. One pair wins a lot of pots heads-up, and jacks or better doesn't work, because about 6 deals in 10 nobody could open.

About 6 players is comfortable. With 7, heavy draws can use up the deck; the dealer then shuffles the discards and keeps dealing, but never gives a player the cards they just threw away. Beyond that, switch to Seven Card Stud.

Host's note: In our $0.25/$0.50 group, the draw nights that go smoothly are the ones where the dealer says the house rules out loud first: how many cards you can draw, whether you show an ace, and whether it's jacks or better. Keep the antes small, so a few passed hands don't eat anybody's stack.
