Home Poker Game Setup: Checklist, Costs and Rules
Updated Oct 22, 2026
A home poker game setup needs 5 things: a padded mat, 2 decks of plastic cards, a chip set, a dealer button and a light over the table. That's about $150 on the kitchen table you already own. Then set the stakes and buy-in, draw seats, write down every buy-in and rebuy, and count chips at the end so the money matches.
What you need for a poker night: the checklist
- Players: 5 to 8 confirmed yeses, and a plan for the one who doesn't show.
- Stakes and buy-in, such as $0.25/$0.50 with a $25 to $50 buy-in; announce a maximum buy-in and rebuy limit too.
- House rules and how you'll settle (cash, Venmo or Zelle), sent to the group chat.
- A neoprene mat or topper, so cards lift easily and chips land quietly.
- 2 decks of plastic cards: one is dealt while the other is shuffled.
- A chip set: 300 chips covers up to 6 players; 500 covers 7 to 10 with rebuys.
- A dealer button.
- A light over the table and somewhere for drinks that isn't the felt. Leave each player room for cards and chip stacks, with comfortable seating and music low enough to hear bets.
- Dry snacks: pizza, chips, a meat and cheese tray.
- One place to record buy-ins, rebuys and final counts.

| Budget | What you buy | Total, about |
|---|---|---|
| $0 | The kitchen table and the cards and chips you own | $0 |
| $50 | Neoprene mat ( |
$55 |
| $150 | Add a 500-piece chip set ( |
$145 |
| $500 | Add an 8-player folding poker table (~$190) only if your table is too small, and put the rest into better chips | $335 + chips |
| $1,500 and up | A pro folding table (~$1,580 on sale) or a furniture-grade table (from ~$2,200) | $1,580+ |
A folding topper with cup holders runs about $60 to $100. Building your own isn't the cheap option: one DIY kit of legs, foam, felt and cup holders is about $260 before the wood, and the most-watched DIY build listed $1,642 in materials. Our poker table guide compares the options.
Compare clay, ceramic and composite poker chips before choosing a set. If you buy one thing, buy the mat. A chip tossed onto bare wood clacks and rolls away; on a mat it just lands, and every player feels that on every hand.
This video prices every option from the kitchen table to a $2,000 custom table, then builds the roughly $150 kit players actually notice. How to run a home poker cash game
- Set the buy-in at 50 to 100 big blinds: $25 to $50 at $0.25/$0.50.
- Build identical stacks from the top down (below), and hand out each rebuy as a single $25 chip so the small colors don't run out.
- Draw seats at random so the same players aren't always acting after the same people. Seat 1 takes the dealer button.
- Deal from 2 decks: the next dealer shuffles one while the other is in play.
- Write down every buy-in and rebuy the moment it happens.
- Count every stack at the end and check it against the money that went in.

12 whites cover 4 orbits of blinds. For 6 players that's 72 whites, 72 reds and 12 greens, plus one $25 chip per rebuy. Other buy-ins are in how many poker chips you need.
Home poker game rules to agree before the first hand
- Table stakes: you can only bet what's in front of you when the hand starts, and rebuys happen between hands.
- Chips stay on the table until you leave; then you cash out whatever is in front of you.
- Misdeals: agree what counts as one and who redeals.
- Showdown: to win the pot, show both cards.
- The clock: how long someone can think before anyone can call the clock on them.
- Settling: everyone settles before they leave.
The rulings that still start arguments are covered in home poker game rules: 21 arguments.
End of the night: count, check and settle
Worked example: 6 players at $0.25/$0.50 with $25 buy-ins and 4 rebuys put $250 on the table, so the final chips must add up to $250.

Who owes whom: Ben pays Alex $34.75, and Eli pays Alex $4.75, Chris $15.00 and Dana $5.25. That's 4 payments. If the chips come up short, look for a rebuy nobody wrote down before anyone pays. HG Poker does this math and shares the result to the group chat; it doesn't hold or move money. The full method is in how to settle up a home poker game.
Host's note: Our game is 5 or 6 friends at $0.25/$0.50 with $25 buy-ins. The chip set came off Facebook Marketplace for about $80, the mat was about $30 and the plastic cards about $20, after too many drugstore decks that died in one game. The slow part was always the end: people forgot how many times they'd rebought, and then we had to sort out cash, Cash App, Venmo and Zelle.
Our own setup video walks through the chips, mat, cards, seat draw and end-of-night settle-up at our $0.25/$0.50 game.Frequently asked questions
What do you need for a poker night? A padded mat or table, 2 decks of plastic cards, a chip set (300 chips for up to 6 players, 500 for 7 to 10), a dealer button and good light. Add agreed stakes, a buy-in and one place to record every rebuy.
How much does it cost to set up a poker night? From $0 on your kitchen table to about $150 for a mat, 2 decks of plastic cards, a 500-piece chip set, a dealer button and a hanging light, at October 2026 prices. A folding poker table adds about $190, and pro tables start around $1,580.
Do you need a poker table to host a home game? No. A neoprene mat on the kitchen table, about $35, is the upgrade players feel on every hand. Buy a folding poker table, about $190, only if your table can't seat everyone you invite.
What are the basic rules for a home poker cash game? Agree on the stakes and buy-in, play table stakes so only the chips in front of you count, rebuy between hands, show both cards to win at showdown, and settle up before anyone leaves.
How much should the buy-in be for a home poker game? 50 to 100 big blinds is typical, which is $25 to $50 at $0.25/$0.50 blinds. Pick an amount nobody minds losing, because some players will rebuy.
Plan stacks for any buy-in with the free poker chip calculator. HG Poker logs every buy-in and rebuy during the game, checks that the final chip counts balance and suggests who pays whom; your group pays each other outside the app. Download on the App Store · Get it on Google Play
